T-Mobile's "Project Dark" plans - switching to a European payment model, allowing simple unlimited data options, and allowing purchase of hardware independent of contracts - will speed adoption of smart phones. Also smartphone users will be more free to migrate from platform to platform. Staying on top of the perch will be more difficult as the hardware and OS become separated from the carrier/plan. Apparently the animations/transitions of 7 make it feel quicker and punchier than Vista, while many real world tests deliver near identical performance as Vista. But if the user feels like it is faster, than that must count for something. I need to RTFA, but I also thought I remember hearing that file copy speeds were improved significantly with 7. There is something to be said to perceived performance as well.
